KANGAROO, New South Wales—Masking his singing voice in a mask, a bearded kangarooskin, and a white hat, Masked Shuffle frontman Seahorses voice boomed across the studio room as he began his first concert since his arrest last month.
“I’m a hero to Australia,” he told the crowd.
“My voice is so powerful and I have a voice that’s so strong and it speaks so loud that people in Australia, my friends in Australia—they hear it, they hear me, they know that I’m here.
I’m like, I am in the country.
I am a hero.”
Shuffle have performed together since 2012 at a time when many Australians were angry at the federal government for the mass detention of asylum seekers, with the band recently having their songs and images taken down from Australian television stations.
Shuffle released their debut album, The Miser, on June 28.
“The album has a very political message,” said frontman John Molyneux.
“There’s a very strong political message that’s behind it, but we don’t have to compromise our principles.
We’re not fighting the war, we’re fighting the political system.”
Masked shuffle singer Seahores wife, Taryn, added: “I don’t want to be a martyr for Australia, but I’m happy that people are finally seeing what I’ve been through.”
Seahors mother, Emma, said she was “delighted” to have her son back on stage.
“It was just amazing.
I’ve never seen anything like it.
Masking Shuffle were one of many acts to appear in the first public viewing of the film at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday, which was also attended by former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. “
When you’ve got a person like him, and he’s the first Australian in a long time to be in Australia and to be able to sing like he is, it’s just so amazing.”
Masking Shuffle were one of many acts to appear in the first public viewing of the film at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday, which was also attended by former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
“We were at the same time at the coronavirus crisis in Australia,” Rudd said.
“So, I guess we just wanted to put on our masks and have a good time and see what it’s like to live with this disease.”
This is the only country in the world that has not had a coronaviruses pandemic.”
